Diary of a rebirthThe faded purple house is now bright purple, and the old picket fence has been replaced with a bright white new one. It's very nice. The neighbor who survived on tuna is gone and his red, two-story house has been razed. It's been a long year and I've learned a lot. I've seen my son suffer incredible loss, and I've seen him pick himself up and get back in the fight. I realize more than ever how strong a family's love can be. And I'm more grateful than ever for the support of a loyal group of friends. Will New Orleans come back? I don't know. It will never be the same, of that I'm sure. But if the city can continue to attract energetic young people and institutions like Loyola nourish their curiosity, there is hope. Scott Sines is deputy editor of The Commercial Appeal.
