Assessing EliotIn November, Eliot Spitzer likely will be elected as New York's next governor. Whether that will be good news for New Yorkers is perhaps debatable, but it's great news for America's economy. It would be unfair to call Washington Post journalist Brooke Masters' biography of New York's crusading attorney general, Spoiling for a Fight: The Rise of Eliot Spitzer, one-sided. Masters presents the arguments of Spitzer's many critics and does so reasonably fairly. So while Spoiling for a Fight isn't mere hagiography, at the end of the day Masters comes down on Spitzer's side of most controversies. She puts Spitzer into the crusading progressive hall of fame alongside such luminaries as Louis Brandeis, Thomas Dewey, Teddy Roosevelt, and Rudy Giuliani. What's interesting about the other crusaders to whom masters favorably compares Spitzer, of course, is that they all used their crusades to advance their political careers. read more. Flow Down UnderSan Clemente, CAThe Flow Team arrived down under to kick off a new season of competition and training. The team has definitely taken on a busy schedule in New Zealand. They are shooting photos for the new 2008 Flow catalog, and theyve also participated in the New Zealand Open. Flow riders Scotty Lago, Clair Bidez, Jeremy Thompson, and Mark Anderson, all competed in this contest and achieved some impressive results. Clair pushed the limits while suffering a minor injury and ended up in 7th place in the womens superpipe. Mark Andersons fight through the competitive field landed him a 16th in the slopestyle. New Flow amateur rider Jeremy Thompson found the superpipe to be his strength finishing in a very impressive12th place. So far, snow goodWHILE most people opt to head to Australia's sandy shores to escape the heat during summer, Balnarring resident Marc Baker prefers to hit the white slopes in Europe and America to pull off some moves on his beloved snowboard. At 16, Baker is well on his way to becoming a force to be reckoned with on the international snowboarding scene. The Woodleigh School student, who is this week's Sports Star, has been snowboarding since he was eight, has been competing at a professional level two to three years and already has built up a list of achievements of which any budding athlete can be proud. For two months, he has been hard at work in Europe, spending most of his time in St Moritz training with his coach Peter Baff and preparing for competitions throughout Italy. read more. REI makes outdoors `in'For years, Steve and Michele Willemin have driven around the Charlotte region in search of backpacking and hiking gear for their family. They've been to Gander Mountain in Mooresville, Jesse Brown's Outdoors in Charlotte, Bass Pro Shops in Concord and even shopped online. Still, the Waxhaw couple felt frustrated by long travel times to get to some of the stores. They were relieved Friday to be at the grand opening of Recreational Equipment Inc. at Carolina Place mall in Pineville, where more than 400 people lined up at 10 a.m. to check out the retailer's first store in the Charlotte region. "We'll probably come here at least once a month," Steve Willemin, 35, said as the couple's 7-year-old daughter Courtney tried on bandanas nearby and 14-year-old son Steve tested a backpack. read more. Our enthusiasm for the issue of Snowboard Boots Boa has developed over time.
